A Valentine's Evening at The Brewery Inn: Our Food Review

As someone who loves food as much as I love marketing, I was delighted when my friend Ashley told me he would be taking over a restaurant "down the road from me" and wanted me to help promote them by creating a new website. Impressed by my initial visit last month, I was invited back by Ashley and Sukie to The Brewery Inn for Valentine's Day, and what a memorable evening it turned out to be.

I started with the scallop dish - and as someone who almost always orders scallops wherever they appear on a menu, I can confidently say these were executed perfectly. The caramelization was spot-on, giving way to beautifully sweet and juicy centers. I particularly appreciated their use of the scallop roe, panko-fried to create a delicious textural element that many restaurants unfortunately discard. The dressed courgettes were an unexpected delight - I'm not usually their biggest fan as someone who can leave or take salads, but they worked wonderfully here bringing a lovely freshness to the dish.

My girlfriend opted for the honey-glazed pork cheek starter, and I'll admit to having serious food envy watching her enjoy every morsel of it. The downside of it being so good was that she had nothing left over to share with me!

For mains, my 6oz fillet steak was a true highlight. The oyster mushrooms brought an incredible depth of flavour, and between the various purées and that rich red wine jus, I found myself ensuring not a drop was left on the plate. Meanwhile, my girlfriend's chicken supreme with its potato fondant and Guinness sauce had her falling silent - always a good sign (it's quite difficult to do!) - and once again, her plate was polished clean before I could even ask for a taste!

The desserts proved to be the perfect finale. My trio of chocolate might sound simple on the menu, but what arrived was a masterclass in textures and flavours. The white chocolate blondie, chocolate mousse, and dark chocolate shard with mint demonstrated real skill and creativity. My girlfriend's profiteroles, filled with Chantilly cream and topped with milk chocolate, disappeared so quickly I didn't stand a chance of sampling them - though her smile told me everything I needed to know.

The Brewery Inn has crafted something special here. I was also lucky enough to be recently invited by Chefs Ashley and Ben to try some dishes from their new menu and it's clear their level of thought and execution is present in every dish.
