In a remarkable achievement for a business based in Milford Waterfront, Pembrokeshire Hearing secured second place in the Start-up Business of the Year category at the celebrated Swansea Bay Business Awards. The accolade was presented by renowned broadcaster Jason Mohammed at the glittering ceremony, marking a significant milestone for this ambitious local enterprise.

We sat down with Kev Workman, co-founder of Pembrokeshire Hearing, to discuss this achievement and the journey that led them here.

Congratulations on your recognition at the Swansea Bay Business Awards. What does this achievement mean to you and your team?

"This recognition means everything to us, especially coming from what many consider a deprived area of Wales. Achievements like this really do make a difference and show that success can come from anywhere with the right dedication and support."

Your partner Emma has played a crucial role in the business. Could you tell us more about her journey?

"Emma's story is truly inspiring. She embarked on her audiology degree 20 years ago whilst caring for her six-month-old daughter, which speaks volumes about her commitment and determination. Her passion for improving people's lives through better hearing healthcare has been the cornerstone of our success. The sacrifices made throughout her career whilst balancing motherhood and her wealth of experience have been the building blocks of Pembrokeshire Hearing."

How has the business evolved since its inception?

"The journey has been incredible. We started with a clear vision of providing accessible, high-quality hearing care to the people of Pembrokeshire. Emma's expertise in audiology, combined with our commitment to customer service, has helped us establish a strong reputation in the community."

Looking ahead, what are your plans for the future?

"We have ambitious plans for expansion, but with a focus on developing local talent. One of our key objectives is to identify and support a local candidate through an audiology degree. This investment in local talent aligns with our vision of opening additional clinics throughout Pembrokeshire. We believe in creating opportunities within our community while expanding our services to reach more people who need hearing care."

What would you say to other entrepreneurs starting businesses in Wales?

"With determination and hard work, you can build something meaningful that serves your community. This recognition from the Swansea Bay Business Awards proves that excellence can emerge from any corner of Wales."
