Football pitches waterlogged, and cricket just weeks away

As we speak, on the 11th of April we have had over seven football matches postponed this evening due to waterlogged pitches. With some teams still needing to complete another five league fixtures as well as cup games. Many sports grounds around the county are used for football and cricket, which means their seasons cannot overlap.

Cricket clubs up and down the county continue to prepare for the season which is just over a fortnight away however groundsmen are unable to properly start any real work on the pitches as they are soaking. With football being played on wet pitches so close to the start of the season, those who share grounds with football clubs will be tearing their hair out that the outfield is being cut up 3/4 times a week.

A tricky situation for all involved, footballers with families and work being asked to play four games a week, managers and referees alike. While the cricket clubs look to the skies daily waiting for weather that will allow the season to start on time. Nobody to blame but the weather and we hope it improves for all those reasons, as well as being able to ditch the coat for a day or two at least.

Pembrokeshire football used to begin the season with midweek games at grounds that didn't interfere with any summer sports. Recently this hasn't been the case, but even three midweek games in August is three games you won't be trying to squeeze in now. There is almost zero chance of not playing those games in August and by the time the first Saturday fixture comes, we used to have a real head start. Maybe some food for thought for those in charge.
