The 2024/25 Joe Lennon Tournament reached its climax on a picturesque Friday evening at Marble Hall, where defending champions Milford Utd hosted the final after claiming the title last year for only the second time in their history. Both Milford Utd and Hakin Utd entered the match on the back of convincing semi-final victories, dispatching Herbrandston and St. Ishmaels with ease.

Pre-match discussions centered around whether Milford Utd could retain the trophy. Many believed they had the upper hand, given Hakin’s recent challenges in rebuilding under the returning Scott Davies, who had limited time to refresh a side apparently in need of new ideas and energy.

The match kicked off at exactly 18:15 under the watchful eye of referee Martin Jones, and it quickly became apparent that Hakin Utd were on a mission. By 18:35, the contest was all but decided, thanks to a blistering hat-trick from Alfie Stottor. The Vikings were relentless, driven by a desire to avenge last year’s unexpected loss to their old rivals. Hakin’s starting eleven were electric, dominating the first half and securing a commanding 4-0 lead by halftime.

In response, Milford Utd made swift adjustments in the second half. Manager Steve Parks' halftime team talk and strategic substitutions brought a noticeable improvement, with the Robins proving much tougher to break down. Liam Parks and Captain Scott Griffith's played pivotal roles in stemming the Hakin tide, ensuring a more competitive second half. The half ended 1-1, with Parks netting a deserved goal for Milford after a tireless performance, while Shane Walsh continued his preseason scoring spree with a well-taken finish for Hakin. The final whistle saw Hakin Utd emerge as 5-1 victors, in what was a thoroughly entertaining showcase of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire League's quality.

Following the match, the post-game ceremony took place at the clubhouse. Tournament organiser Jonny Bap, alongside Hakin legend Daisy Picton, presented the Man of the Match shield to hat-trick hero Alfie Stottor. Joe Lennon's grandchildren had the honor of handing the trophy to Hakin captain Jay Power. Bappy also took the opportunity to thank everyone involved in the tournament, including all four clubs and referee Martin Jones, who officiated all three matches.

Both clubs showed promise ahead of the upcoming Division 1 season, with good-natured banter flowing in the bar area afterward. Fans and players from all teams enjoyed the warm weather, cold beers, and live music organised by the home club, capping off a memorable evening.

The Joe Lennon Tournament once again highlighted the beauty of grassroots football, bringing together clubs and supporters in a celebration of all that’s great about the sport.
