In yesterday's second semi-final of the esteemed Joe Lennon tournament, recently promoted St Ishmael’s faced off against the mighty Vikings, Hakin Utd, at Marble Hall. The pitch was in amazing condition following Monday's rain, setting the stage for a highly anticipated match. With Tish having beaten Hakin a few weeks ago in a pre-season friendly, both teams fancied their chances.
Hakin Utd, featuring a youthful squad bolstered by new signing Jordan Kilby from Monkton, started the match brightly. However, it was St Ishmael’s who initially caught the eye with Captain Brennan Devonald, Ieuan Hawkins, and Joel Mills making early strides.
The turning point came early in the game when Hakin's Leon Luby skillfully took on Captain Devonald, who conceded a penalty by hanging out a leg. Ben Alfred stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Hakin Utd dominated the first half, adding four more goals. Leon Luby scored twice, Alfie Stottor found the net, and Shane Walsh delivered an absolute world-class finish to round off the scoring spree.
In the second half, Hakin made several substitutions, bringing on some of their promising youngsters. Despite a resolute defensive effort from St Ishmael’s, Hakin added two more goals, with Stottor scoring again and Harding sealing the deal.
The match ended with a decisive 7-0 victory for Hakin Utd, propelling them into Friday’s final against home favourites Milford Utd. The final promises to be a thrilling encounter. A decent crowd watched this evening’s match, and Referee Marty Jones commended both teams for their superb conduct and respect, making it a pleasure to officiate.
Final Score: Hakin Utd 7-0 St Ishmael’s.
