As the Pembrokeshire footballing community prepares for a jam-packed schedule of fixtures for the 2024-25 campaign, last season's Senior Cup finalists met once again in Pembrokeshire's equivalent of the Community shield - the Jubilee Cup.

The match was hosted at the always impeccable Monkton Lane with a minutes silence following the sad passing of Pembrokeshire league stalwart Brian Hawkins.

The Phoenix Boys would have gone into the game with confidence after a comprehensive 9-0 victory over their opponents just a couple of weeks ago, but that game had seen an early dismissal for Travis Jones making the task difficult for the Farming Army.

The neutral spectators would have been hopeful for a more closely contested encounter akin to last season's Cup Final clash and the game certainly started in such fashion with both sides showing hunger and aggression, battling in all areas.

The first key chance of the game came around the 20th minute, with Rhys Mansell making an excellent save to deny Jonny Horgan after a cross in to him.

Just a couple of minutes later and Goodwick found the breakthrough with Rhys Dalling striking a low finish past the 'keeper.

Dalling had a chance to make it two about ten minutes later, only to be denied by another strong save.

Goodwick started the second half as they finished the first, creating good chances. Will Haworth saw a strong effort saved by another excellent save, after great work to cut in on to his left foot.

As the Phoenix Boys looked like they were building up ahead of steam, Clarbeston Road responded with a headed goal from Matthew Davies at the far post, following a flick-on from a long throw.

Goodwick were then awarded a penalty after James Bryan collided with Clarby defenders challenging for the ball in the air.

Rhys Jones stepped up to fire home from the spot, sending the 'keeper the wrong way with a confident finish.

Goodwick then doubled the lead in the 67th minute after dazzling footwork from Rhys Dalling on the left saw him turn two players before floating a superb cross to the back post for Jones to fire home for his second.

Clarby once again showed their strength from set-pieces, with Dan Bryce the unfortunate victim of an own goal, following a fantastic whipped corner into the box from Jake Booth.

Clarby attempted to rally for a late equaliser, but Goodwick showed their class to see the game out professionally, despite a late dismissal for Jonny Horgan for lashing out near the corner flag on Travis Jones.

Both teams will turn their focus to their League campaigns beginning Tuesday (20th) as Goodwick host Carew and Clarbeston Road travel back to Monkton Lane to take on Monkton Swifts.
