On a stunning Pembrokeshire evening, Monkton reserves played host to newly promoted Lawrenny in what turned out to be an exhilarating early-season clash. The home side showcased a refreshed squad featuring a mix of seasoned players and promising youngsters, including the return of Jack Steele from Hundleton.
Despite missing several key players due to cricket commitments, Lawrenny fought valiantly but faced an uphill battle against a relentless Monkton side. From the outset, Monkton asserted their dominance, launching a barrage of attacks that quickly saw them take a commanding 2-0 lead. Jonathan Lee, the 16-year-old prodigy, was at the heart of their offensive efforts, leaving the Lawrenny defence scrambling with every touch.
Lawrenny managed to pull one back through the experienced Matthew Lewis, but their hopes of a comeback were short-lived. Monkton responded with two more goals before half-time, both courtesy of the electric Lee, to head into the break with a 4-1 advantage.
The second half brought a brief resurgence from Lawrenny, who found the back of the net three times— all from the boot of Matthew Lewis, whose hat-trick was nothing short of spectacular. However, Monkton's firepower proved too much to handle. Jack Steele and the irrepressible Jonathan Lee continued to terrorise the Lawrenny defence, while Captain Harry Turner orchestrated play from midfield. Monkton added to their tally, eventually running out 8-3 winners in a match filled with attacking flair and moments of brilliance.
The evening was capped off by a commendable display of sportsmanship, with referee Martin Jones praising both teams for their respectful play— no yellow cards were issued, and the match was devoid of any nasty challenges.
Monkton's performance has set the tone for the season ahead, with Jonathan Lee emerging as a standout talent. If this match is anything to go by, Monkton will be a force to be reckoned with this season. It was a night to remember, with the beautiful weather only adding to the enjoyment for all in attendance.
