Rob Hood's Herbrandston and Toby Hayman's Burton have stood out as the two best teams in this years second division and the table reflects that. Burton were top of the table coming into this clash and were hoping to bounce back after two defeats in a row.
Visitors skipper Hayman won the toss and elected to bowl understandably after the wet weather recently. However the hosts got off to a flyer thanks to Harry Nicholas 49 from 57 balls and Charlie Malloy who made 30 off 35 balls. Jack Nicholas and Kristan Bennett kept up the good run rate as the number 3 and 4 added 39 and 25 respectively. Morgan Scale however bowled well and slowed the scoring rate down with his nine overs only costing 32 runs and picking up two wickets in the process. Luke Hayman also kept things tighter than most of his fellow bowlers as his 9 overs returned very tidy figures of 1-36. Herbie ended their innings on 216/7 a decent total but not beyond chasing especially with the quality in the Burton line up.
Hayman and Kiff were the key men, Hood knew these two wickets held the key to winning the game. Hayman led from the front as always with a typically classy 98 including ten 4s. Kiff wasn't far behind as he added 73 from just 69 balls, when Hayman was dismissed his team were 191/4 and still in pole position. The final over began with Burton needing 12 and Luke Hayman and Morgan Scale at the crease, Hayman hit a 2, a 6 and a single. Which meant it was 2 to win off the final ball, and a single would have tied the game. Scale was the man on strike and was unable to get bat on ball meaning Hayman was run out and victory was Herbie's. A brilliant game and credit to both teams who look very likely to get promoted together come the end of August. Veteran Paul Nicholas was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as his experienced and clever bowling spell ended with figures of 2-33 from his nine overs. Hood's men now sit top of the table and five points clear of Burton who occupy second place.
