Second Division Cricket Round Up – 8th June

The matches on the 8th of June produced some significant results in the Second Division, notably putting Burton at the top of the table with an 8-point lead over Herbrandston. Pembroke Dock remains at the bottom, level on points with Llanrhian, both teams having secured only one win so far this season.

Burton scored a huge 275 thanks to some outstanding batting from skipper Hayman and excellent new signing Joe Kiff, they were well supported by  Jon Venables (24) and Dan Llewellyn (38). The Dock's bowlers struggled to gain any control or really trouble the Burton batting line up, Scott Griffiths was the only bowler to have any real success as he finished with figures of 3-20.  Pembroke Dock's response never really got going with again only Griffiths putting in any real performance of note as he added 33, following from his useful 38 with the bat Llewelyn took 4-14 in a brilliant spell that ended the Docks' chances of getting anywhere near their target.

David Dredge's unbeaten 121 proved match winning for Lamphey as he led his team to victory when they chased down their target of 174 set by Carew's second team. Haydn Shapcott (60) and Sion Jenkins (34) batted well for Carew but 174 was always going to be under par. Experienced spin bowler Hywel Gibbs was the thorn in Carew's side as he took 4-40 in a good spell. After tea it was the David Dredge show as his outstanding 121 meant Lamphey reached their target having lost only four wickets, an important win for Lamphey.

Following some impressive performances a weakened Johnston team due to players being away were skittled for just 87 a score that was never going to be enough. Callum James impressed with the ball for Hook as he took 4-32. Hook looked comfortable in their reply and reached their total losing just two wickets, George James 32* and Harry Makepeace 20* made no mistake in getting their team over the line in a big win for Hook.

Herbrandston were knocked off the top of the league as they lost to Llechryd. When Llechryd made 152 all out Herbie would have been confident of being able to chase it, however Llechryd had other ideas and defended their total well. Their 152 was mainly thanks to an excellent knock of 102* from Joe Mansfield, with Dean John a threat as always taking 3-27. Despite a half century from the in form Harry Nicholas Herbie fell short of their target as they were 135 all out. Llechryd bowlers James Henneker: 2-16 and David Blackburn: 3-10 kept things tight while picking up vital wickets which made sure of the win for Llechryd which was much needed.

Pembroke bounced back from their local derby defeat by scoring a huge total of 289 for 9 and effectively batting Llanrhian out of the game. It was a real team effort for Pembroke with a number of contributions, notably Jack Harries (45), Will Davies (40), Ceri Brace (57) and Billy Wood (96) who fell just four runs short of a century. Joe Crellin picked up six wickets for Llanrhian and followed it up with 74 however his excellent performance was in vain. Llanrhian managed 200 all out which was a fair way off their target and Pembroke will be delighted with this dominant performance.
