The 2024 Pembroke County Bowls Association Brains Cup was won by Haverfordwest St Thomas 95-52 over holders, Pendine, on Sunday (Jun 23), a rematch of the 2023 final at Fishguard Bowling Club. Senior County Vice President Paul Blaney welcomed both teams to his home rink at the King George V field in Saundersfoot, for a competition between teams who play in Division 2 of the Pembrokeshire County League.
To reach the final Pendine overcame Neyland, Pembroke Dock Warrior and Saundersfoot St Issells in their group, whilst Haverfordwest St Thomas defeated Fishguard & Goodwick and Milford Haven, to take their place on the rink for the final.
Played on four rinks (of four players) the winning team would be the one who accrued the most ‘shots’ over 21 ends and it was St Thomas captain Ken Simpson who proudly lifted the cup in the late afternoon sun. This was the first time it had been won by St Thomas since 2012, by coincidence at Saundersfoot although the Haverfordwest Castle side triumphed on 2016, when again with a quirkiness associated to sport, Blayney was the President of the County Bowls Association.
Commencing this week at the Parade, home of Haverfordwest Bowls Club are the County open and senior semi-finals, for singles, pairs, triples and rinks, when the ‘jacks’ due to be rolled at 6pm.
