Neyland 135-7 beat Lawrenny 134 all out
Neyland (135-7) extended their lead at the top of Divison 1 as they pursue the retention of the James Morris Memorial Cup, recording a 3 wicket win over Lawrenny (134ao) at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (Jun 15).
Skipper Sean Hannon invited his counterpart Ryan Morton’s side to bat first, Hannon (1-26) having an involvement in the first two wickets as he had Fin Lewis (4) caught by veteran Gregg Miller at first slip before he caught Troy Purslove (10 1x6; 1x4) at mid off, from the bowling of another veteran Alan Webster (2-44), after he replaced his skipper.
From the opposite Town end, opening bowler Tom Pritchard showed consistency and rhythm to record 5 maidens in taking 1-17 from his allocated 9 overs, over two spells.
An inspired bowling performance after a rain delay and early tea, again over two spells from seamer Jack John saw him snaffle 6-25, including opening batsman Harry Thomas (30; 5x4) caught at the wicket by Paul Murray. John bowled the dangerous Morton (33; 1x6; 4x4) whilst also removing Joe Kidney for 10 (1x6) and Oscar Lewis (2), both lbw. John’s final two wickets were wicket keeper Will Allen (5; 1x4) caught in the gully by Webster and the Lawrenny senior statesman, Rob Williams (2) the last man out, bowled by John, leaving Rhys Eynon unbeaten on 14 (2x4), the equally venerable Andrew Miller wicketless as his slow turners went for just 19 runs.
The visitors total many thought wouldn’t be easy to chase on a deteriorating used wicket, but opening batsmen Paul Murray (58; 12x4) and Gregg Miller (11; 2x4) laid to rest any early fears the all whites may have had in the pursuit of victory. Teenager Oscar Lewis (4-31) troubled both, bowling Miller before having Ashley Sutton (7; 1x4) caught by Purslowe and teenager Ashley Watkins (2) caught by Kidney to reign back the positive Neyland reply.
Morton (2-26) managed his bowlers skilfully to keep the game live, as he bowled both Murray and Ysgol Caer Elen student Dylan James (0), in tandem with teenager Fin Lewis (1-39), who lured  Webster (12; 2x4) into Morton’s hands at long off, the ball after he had played the same shot for one of his two boundaries.
A watchful Dai Davies (10; 1x4) took Neyland to within sight of victory alongside an equally patient Andrew Miller (19no; 1x4) before he became Oscar Lewis final wicket with a lose shot into the hands of his elder brother Fin at point.
This set up a potentially wavering final run charge, those nerves ebbing away as skipper Hannon with two boundaries in an unbeaten 11 joined Miller at the crease, a 19 point haul for Neyland.
