Otters star Gibby reflects on success

After an outstanding Championship winning season we sat down with Otters star Lewys Gibby after a season that couldn't have gone much better for Lewys personally or for Narberth as a team. Gibby is a popular Pembrokeshire sportsman and his vision, pace and killer side steps make him one of the county's best players with an oval shape ball in hand. He also is a more than handy cricketer down at Stackpole and an all round good guy of local sport. Lewys took the time to reflect on the season just gone.
First of all Lewys thanks for taking the time to talk to us. You must be delighted with how the last two seasons have gone since your move to Narberth?
Yeah definitely, the last 2 seasons have been very good with some really strong performances displayed by the boys. With the league changes before the season starting it was very new to everyone, we aimed high as always to try and win some silverware and we did!
We know leaving Pembroke was a tough call for you, however everyone seems delighted you’ve gone on to really make your mark in the championship, how different is the championship from division one?
Leaving pembroke was always a tough decision but it’s great to see the club going strong. A massive shout out to the u17s/youth who went unbeaten this year winning league and cups! Every league you play in there will always be tough hostile places to play.
Winning the league must be up there with your best achievements to date? At which point in the season did the squad really feel the league was theirs for the taking?
Exactly, winning the league doesn’t happen every year so this certainly has to be up there. We set goals at the start of the year and took every set of games as they come. The league came down to the final game so we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. All the boys stuck together and we achieved our goal of the season!
With the cricket season round the corner will you be back down Stackpole or is it time for a rest?
Yeah I’ll have to polish the box and get back down the cricket pitch at Stackpole, always good to play through the summer.
And finally what’s the plans and goals for next season for yourself and the otters?
I think the goals have to be similar to the season just gone and aim high. We know we’re going into a very competitive league so maintaining the same standards and making the club proud is what will come first.
