Pembrokeshire Junior Chess Club travelled to Carmarthen Monday 7th April to play their counterparts. The Carmarthen team were slightly older but playing their first game. Thank you to Peter Evans for arranging. It was great to see 20 youngsters playing and enjoying chess. There were some great games with a terrific atmosphere with everyone enjoying themselves.
The result of the first match was tied at 5 all. Players were mixed and matched with everyone having a minimum of two games, some three or four games. For Pembrokeshire Suki 3 wins, Huw 2 wins and Joe, one win and a draw were the stand out performers on the night and for Carmarthen Matthew, William and Eric stood out.
The plan is for a return game in Pembrokeshire before the season ends and the Club is hoping for another game v Redhill Prep School and Castell Nedd Chess Club on the 29th May.
Martin Jones coach of Pembrokeshire has been delighted this year with the progress of everyone this year. The Club also have a lot of younger and less experienced players who are also doing very well.
Ten members of the club played in the Redhill Primary school festival on the weekend and all competed with distinction, mention should be made of Joe and Harry who after 4 rounds had won all their games and competed in the final with Joe winning the Gold medal and Harry having a Silver.
Coach Martin Jones has recently taken part in the Bristol Chess Congress with 62 entrants in his section which he won outright.
It's great to see chess flourishing in Pembrokeshire
