Tenby and Monkton Swifts will battle it out this evening at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium, with the winner facing Hakin in an all Pembrokeshire final.
Tenby enter this match off the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Goodwick, as Rhys Dalling’s late strike ensured that the champions completed their season undefeated. However, Tenby have had practice playing Pembrokeshire sides in the West Wales Cup this season, having beaten Pennar Robins and Merlins Bridge in the previous two rounds.
It was in the Quarter-Final where they beat the latter, where a brace from Scott Ferney against his former side helped them to see off the challenge from Merlins Bridge. Further goals from Spencer Williams, Jacob Hipkiss and youngster James Ardern ensured the Bridge were unable to spark a comeback, despite two goals from Hayden Dimond.
Ferney is Tenby’s leading goalscorer this season, having scored 17 goals in Division One this season. This, along with his five goals in the West Wales Cup, makes him a player to watch out for this evening. Fellow attacker Joe Leahy, a West Wales Cup winner with Merlins Bridge, also has five goals in this competition this season. Him and Ferney have a combined 30 goals in Division One this season. Monkton will have to keep these two quiet if they hope to succeed in the match. Supported by brothers Daryl and Jerome Williams, Tenby's side is filled with quality and experience.
Monkton, on the other hand, are in some great form as they head into this match. You have to go back to November of last year to find the last time they failed to win a game. During that time they have won 13 games in a row, 10 of which were in Division One where they conceded only four goals.
The Swifts had the task of beating Ynystawe Athletic in the Quarter-Final, where goals from Dylan Davies, Billy Davis and Paul Miller ensured their place in the Semi Finals. Dylan Davies is their top scorer in the league this season, helping them to get within touching distance of finishing in third place. He is also the top scorer in the West Wales Cup this season, with his 11 goals definitely playing a big part in the Swifts getting to the stage of the competition.
What has been impressive about Monkton's team is the ease in which the stars of their title-winning 2nds team from last season have made the step up with the likes of Liam Butland and Billy Davis playing key roles throughout the season, as well as manager Cory Mair. For them, this match will represent a welcome return to the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium, looking to avenge last season's 2nd Division Cup defeat.
The last time these two sides met was at the beginning of November, where Tenby defeated Monkton 5-2. However, just a month prior Monkton had beaten Tenby 4-3. Although, Tenby also secured a comprehensive 7-2 victory over Monkton in the Senior Cup, between these two league encounters.
This, alongside Monkton’s recent form, shows that there is everything to play for at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium tonight, with the two teams also battling for third place in Division One.
