The Pembroke County Bowls Division 2 encounter between promotion chasing Milford and their second side, St Katherines took place at Milford Bowling club on Saturday (Jul 5). With a backdrop to the music from the Town Carnival, greenkeeper Leigh Hughes completed the second cut of his matchday preparations on his well maintained and manicured green, for the eagerly awaited game which drew a throng of spectators, including family members ranging from toddlers to Octogenarians.

The green also encompassed a variance in age, from St Katherines captain, Lance Murphy who clocks in at 84 down to Chad Bevan, who is a teenager and starting out in the game and playing as the number 2 to his Milford captain and rink skip, Keith Graham, emerging victorious 22-14 in their rink on the day. There were also a number of ladies sprinkled amongst the rinks to epitomise the inclusive club nature at Milford, where the post match speeches from the two captains added to the ambience of the occasion, fitting to dovetail into the carnival atmosphere in the Town. The mantra of the club is one in which everyone is encouraged to enjoy the sport and the facilities the club has to offer, which is situated between Pill Lane and Sandhurst Road. The club welcomes new members and if anyone is interested in having a ‘roll up’ or supporting the club in anyway, they should make the way down to the bowling green and introduce themselves in person.

Milford emerged winners from the day by nine shots, with a 83-72 winning margin, also winning three of the four rinks to the delight of Captain Graham, who was humble in his post match demeanour as his side took 12 points in their promotion push, whilst the St Katherines side had to be content with the 2 points they achieved. There was some solace for the St Katherines captain Murphy and his rink members, as they won their own battle on the green, 37 shots to 9 for the biggest winning margin of the day. Leigh Hughes also knew the green well as his Milford rink also managed a high winning margin, by 34 shots to 9.

The Kats have another home game this week, where take on Neyland on Wednesday (Jul 9) whilst Milford wait until Saturday (Jul 12) before they play again, when Pembroke Dock Warrior are the visitors to Milford.
