League leaders Fishguard (67-2) maintained their chase for the Albert Scourfield Cup in Division 3 on Saturday (Jul 5) with an eight wicket victory over visitors to Tregoes Park, Laugharne Athletic (61ao), who elected to bat first on winning the toss. Niall Kinsella was the pick of the Twin Town bowlers when he came on first change to take 4-9 after new ball bowlers Anthony Couzens (1-6) and Ashish Jayes (1-13) made early inroads, veteran Nigel Delaney taking 2-9 with the Pritchard and Co Accountants sponsored match ball. He then scored an unbeaten 33 to bring his side to victory alongside sides (12no), whose two scoring shots were maximums to win the game.
Pembroke Dock (91-0) remain in close contention after a convincing ten wicket derby win at the Clive Huxley Memorial ground over Bosherston & Stackpole (91ao), whose skipper Josh Davies elected to bat first on winning the toss. His side fell to 58-9 as new ball bowler James White (4-15) wreaked havoc at the top of the home batting order, left arm seamer Neil Gregory (2-7) assisting. Veteran Nick Daley pooled all his knowledge in taking 2-19, visiting skipper George Smith incurring the brunt of a final wicket partnership of 32 from his former team mates, Jonathan Hughes (22no; 1x6;2x4) and Dan Bower (18; 4x4) before he was last man out for the Lillies bowled by Rhys Daley (1-1), Marcus Adie striking a brace of maximums and a boundary his is 16 the only other batsman in double figures.
The Dockers completed the rout in the twelfth over, Jake Griffiths striking four strikes over the boundary and five across the floor in a 33 ball unbeaten 53, Nick Daley slightly more behind the eight ball with an unbeaten 28 (1x6;2x4;38balls).
In another Pembroke derby encounter, Lamphey (72-1) leap frogged to join hosts Hundleton & Wallaston (68ao) in third place after their nine wicket success, all rounder Owen Hughes the only home batsman with a significant contribution of 28. The Stags star men with the ball were Sylas Ferran (3-17) and veteran spinner Hywel Gibbs (3-19), in form David Blackwell running up an unbeaten 37no in the victory charge.
Kilgetty (198-4) ensured they kept themselves clear of the relegation zone with a narrow success over Haverfordwest II (193-7) by 5 runs at Kingsmore, Anthony Lewis (4-36) and Ryan Cooper (2-54) the leading lights with the ball after Richard ebb had stroked an unbeaten 11 and Ben Evans 50. Skipper Mathew Vaughans right arm seam took 2-34 for the Town stiffs and Doug Johnson led the batting with 58.
Neyland II (133-1) completed a nine wicket victory over fellow relegation candidates Hook II (132ao) at the Athletic ground, Lewis Page the star performer for the ‘All Whites’ with an unbeaten 66 and 3-31 return as his side secured their second win of the season. He was assisted in the batting alongside opening partner Dylan James (56) before he became the only wicket to fall to Bradley Flood (1-38). Teenager Charlie Hood was unbeaten with 37 for the Black Diamonds, Dafydd Bowen also frying in with 26, Page assisted in the bowling stakes by teenager Corey Riley (2-38), Iestyn Miles (2-13) and Charlie French (2-11).
Pembroke II (153-8) have opened up a 19 point lead in the pursuit for the Rowland Jones Cup in Division 4 as they defeated Carew III (131ao) at the Castle ground by 22 runs. Charlie Perkins top scored with 51 and the evergreen Phil Jones 28, the Rooks leading lights with the ball being Conor Davies and Ianto Hicks, both with 2-22. Jay Sutherland (3-24) and the venerable Steve Durston (2-18) secured the success, another veteran Dai Rees contributing 30 alongside Jac Scourfield (45) in the defeat which sees them flirting just outside the relegation places.
Nearest rivals to Pembroke II, Saundersfoot II (145-9) suffered their first defeat of the season at the King George V field to visitors Lawrenny II (186-6) by 43 runs after they were invited to bat. Dan Broomhall took 3-36 for the Seasiders but the innings belonged to the Gavanyards Rhys Eynon who struck 114 and Steve Cambell 50, before teenager Noah Williams (3-18) and spinner Rhydian Eynon (3-20) took up the challenge with the ball. The home side runs came from the bat of Steve Cook (44) and Aryan Kawale (27), the defeat also opening the door at the top of the table to St Ishmaels II.
St Ishmaels II (164-7) maintained their hopes of promotion with a resounding 81 run victory at home to Narberth II who were then dismissed for 83, teenager Caydn McGuire with 3-15 endorsing his signing recently to the Mice from neighbours Herbrandston, alongside fellow teenager and new ball bowler Maddox Bradshaw (2-17). Veteran Stuart Carpenter (2-9) took the wicket of top scorer and fellow Pembrokeshire Vets player on 62-3, Andrew Williams, who top scored with 41 (4x4). Emyr Jenkins (14;2x4) helped add 48 for the second wicket, with four ‘Barmy Army’ batsmen dismissed for ducks. Earlier in the day in form opening batsman Darren Hawkins stroked seven boundaries in the top score of 62, his watchful innings key as wickets fell regularly to teenager Ollie Johns (3-41). Veteran skipper Richard Howells seven over spell yielded nine runs (2 maidens) for 1-9 as did Morgan Reekie (1-9), the other wickets taken by Alan Elmer (1-19). Captain Carpenter struck a six and five boundaries in his 38, adding 68 for the sixth wicket with Hawkins, who was joined by sibling Ieuan Hawkins (12;2x4) in adding 24 for the seventh wicket.
Crymych (211-5) recorded a resounding success on the Lower Racecourse by 133 runs over a youthful Haverfordwest III (78ao) after skipper Mark Davies elected to field on winning the toss. His side had some early success through teenage opening bowler Siddak Mahey (2-38) and change bowler, veteran Richrd Davies who took a brace of wickets, his final over conceding 22 to the batting prowess of Hedd Nicholas (29; 2x6;3x4)). Castell Newydd Emlyn PE teacher Elgan Vittle batted the innings for an unbeaten 93, the veteran stroking a classy fourteen boundaries as he shared 94 for the fourth wicket with his skipper, Steffan Williams (36;3x4) and 39 for the fifth wicket with Nicholas. Danny Dewstowe, batting at number 10 top scored for the Town with 35, which included a brace of sixes and five boundaries in his nine scoring shots, Mahey adding 18 (2x4) at the top of the order the only other batsman in double figures. New ball bowler Ifan Lewis took 5-19 and his partner Ellis Williams 3-19 to leave the home side on 38-8 before Dewstowe stepped forth with his hard hitting cameo.
The Connect: Pembrokeshire featured match at Pills Park saw Llangwm II (166-2) lift themselves out of the relegation zone as they defeated visitors Llanrhian II (163-6) who fall below them. Josh Davies scored an unbeaten 52 for the ‘Three Salmons’ alongside Tenby headteacher Johnny Palmer 42 and Tom Rees with an unbeaten 40, Amanda Johns using the St Davids Chip shop sponsored match ball to good effect to take 2-57. Former Llangwm player Ryan Bywater with 45 and veteran ‘Cow’ opening batsman Tony Kitchell (47) contributed to the visitors tally before tea scribed in the book by Chloe Davies, Jake Thomas (3-12) and Oliver Davies (2-6) the main wicket takers for the home side, which featured a father and daughter in Darren and Daisy Brick, alongside ‘Aunty’ Zoe.
The Einion Richards Cup, donated by a former Police Superintendent from Pembroke Dock looks to be a battle in Division 5 between Herbrandston second team who are two points behind their counterparts Llechryd, on 190 points, after the Milford village side won by 132 runs at Imble Lane. They dismissed hosts Pembroke Dock for 102, with veteran seamer Mark Hicks taking 3-15, whilst the equally venerable Paul Nicholas had the home side in a pickle with 2-18. Ysgol Harry Tudor maths teacher Luke Murray got his sums correct to add 24 (5x4) from his opening berth before Corey Edge blasted two maximums and five boundaries in his 43, his sixth wicket partnership with Steve Davies (14; 2x4) adding 43. Rhys Power returned 2-28 before skipper Ian Milsom revved up his chainsaw to take 3-15 to end the game.
The visitors batted well through their innings, opening batsmen Karl Davies (58;6x4) and Johnny ‘Bap’ Lewis (38; 8x4) buttering the bread with an 84 run partnership. The filling came from Power as he hit two balls over the boundary line and five across the floor in his 41, wicketkeeper Aaron Bowles (26no; 2x6;1x4) and Adam Parr who struck six maximums and two boundaries in a 37 ball top score of 63, his dominance over a ten over period saw the scoreboard riffle from 136-4 to 226-5. Murray pilfered 3-46 after veteran new ball bowler Steve Alford had taken 2-19, Davies (1-25) and Phil Scott (1-45) the other successful Dock bowlers.
Whitland III mustered 69-8 at the RDM Oval, home of table topping Llechryd II (71-1), the nine wicket win came through the bat of John Curran before he retired on 42 and Duncan Blackburn with an unbeaten 23. Curran (2-12) and veteran Richard Fletcher (2-11) kept the ‘Borders’ under the thumb with the ball, Rhys Davies (14) and Rhys Jones (12) the only batsmen in double digits.
Hundleton II (70-2) gave themselves some breathing space at the foot of the table with an eight wicket win on the artificial wicket at the Athletic ground, hosts Neyland III dismissed for 69, David Lockyear (3-10) and Lois Hughes (3-24) leading the way with the ball, before Connor Beynon top scored in the win with 26.
The Ashton Cup (in memory of former County President Julia White, MBE) for the Division 6 winners looks to be a fight between table toppers Pembroke III and Llechryd II.
Pembroke (118ao) suffered their first defeat of the campaign at close rivals Lamphey II (223ao) despite the efforts of Aiden Frazer (60) and 4-40 from Bobbie Neale. The village side from up the road was built around 73 from Tom Colley and Huw Bendall (57), John Edwards also adding 35 before Jack Halstead returned 4-21 for the Stags.
The gap has been narrowed to 4 points as Llechryd III (74-3) defeated Kilgetty II (73ao) on the artificial wicket at Ysgol Preseli, Marcus Elmer contributing over half the runs with 40no, octogenarian spinner and former County president Nick Evans continues to defy his years taking 3-9 in a losing cause for the side with whom he lifted Harrison Allen Bowl, DR Morris and League titles after a stellar career at Cresselly.
Kelvin Holmes (2-4), skipper and former league umpire, Neil Croucher (2-8) and Ben Turnbull (2-14) were the main wicket takers for the north county side, only Mike Smith making inroads with the bat, scoring 25.
The combined Cresselly / Haverfordwest side (46ao) under guiding skipper David Cleverly, lost a low scoring encounter on the Racecourse to visitors Whitland III (73ao), Stephen Davies top scored on the day to ensure the win with 18 as the ball dominated the bat. Davies (3-11) and Sion Benjamin (4-7) set up the 27 run win after tea, only John Lewis with 14 in double digits. Teenagers Fin Rowlands (2-13) and Osian Mills (2-7) assisted their equal Cody James with the ball for the combined side, 13 year old James taking four wickets without conceding a run, a fine achievement for any bowler but especially for one who is just setting out on his cricketing journey.
