David Lee has been crowned champion of the Henry Janes Memorial Pool Tournament, following an intense match last Saturday (31st May) at the Mill-Ford Arms.

The tournament, which has grown to become one of the biggest Welsh pool events since its inception by organiser Eddy Collins, concluded what many described as an exceptional finals day. The competition uses a handicap system to ensure fair play between competitors of varying abilities and boasts one of the largest prize pools in the country.

Lee defeated tournament founder Eddy Collins in the final, with Collins graciously acknowledging his opponent's victory. "Very well played David Lee, you were absolutely class mate," Collins said. "I gave everything and tried my best but you were simply the better man on the day. Whatever I threw at you, you responded in spades. I have no problems whatsoever losing to you when you play as good as that."

The tournament is named in honour of Henry "Huggy" Janes, a legendary Pembrokeshire pool player who won the town’s singles championship on numerous occasions. Poignantly, Lee had previously played alongside Janes at the the Pump on the Green at the time of the latter's passing.

Reflecting on his victory, Lee said: "To say I'm chuffed is an understatement. Runner up in the Pembrokeshire doubles memorial and winner of the Pembrokeshire singles memorial. My mate Henry was looking down and helping me out. Life in the old dog."

The plate competition, which allows those defeated in the first round a second chance of silverware, was won by youngster Dylan Cox, who defeated Luke Guymer in what was described as an excellent match between two skilled opponents. Cox continues to grow in stature, securing another important victory at such a young age.

Mill-ford Arms publican David Lilley provided generous support for the event, offering free food for all attendees and re-clothing both tables specifically for the finals. The venue was described as "buzzing all day just like the old days," with many of Henry's family and friends in attendance enjoying the atmosphere he would have loved.

The tournament has experienced significant growth since its inception, with games live-streamed to audiences of hundreds of viewers. Collins expressed his gratitude to all who attended, noting the exceptional turnout that made for a memorable conclusion to another successful year of the memorial competition.
