Carew move back to top of the table in Division One, as Cresselly are handed their first defeat of the season by Herbrandston. We take a look at the game, plus big wins for Saundersfoot and Burton, in this week’s Division One Review.
Herbrandston travelled to Cresselly knowing that they had their work cut out trying to be beat the undefeated league leaders. Their task was made difficult from the get go, as the hosts won the toss and decided to bat first. Charlie Arthur picked up 46 from number three in the order, before he was caught by Harry Nicholas. He was replaced by Kyle Quatermaine, who took the score to 164-4 before he was dismissed, contributing 41 of his own. It was Morgan Britton who had Kyle out, with Britton finishing with 2-21 and Dean John 4-37. Eventually, Cresselly were bowled out for 192. The home side got off to the perfect start, with Herbrandston finding themselves 15-2 thanks to Charlie Arthur (2-46). This meant both Harry and Jack Nicholas needed to bring their A game for their side to stand a chance in this game, and they did. The twins combined to add 101 to the score before Jack was dismissed on 52, with brother Harry adding 58. Kristian Bennett was on hand to add 47 and remain at the crease to help ensure Herbrandston beat the league leaders and jumped above Lawrenny into fifth.
Burton travelled to Haverfordwest hoping to build on last weeks victory vs Saundersfoot. With the visitors choosing to bat first, Captain Toby Hayman top scored for the visitors with 23, with Gavin Campbell just behind on 20. Jake Merry was the pick of the bowling with 5-23, alongside Clive Tucker (2-17) and Chris Phillips (2-28) who all contributed to bowling Burton out for 119. A very chase-able target some may have said, but Haverfordwest never got going with the bat, with a quick two wickets from John Scale (2-22) and one from Gavin Campbell (1-16) saw the home side sit at 31-3. Ben Field proved to be the only real hope for the home side, but when Jack Davies dismissed him on 34 for his second of four wickets (4-31) you could sense that Burton were on the verge of completing another great victory. And that’s exactly what the away side did, with Morgan Scale (2-14) helping to see them over the line, bowling Haverfordwest out for 90 and securing the 17 point victory.
Saundersfoot hosted Lawrenny, with the away side the only toss winners who chose to bowl first in the division. It was the Mansbridge show during the Saundersfoot innings, with Jon scoring 106 and Tom 105 as they set a score of 265-6 after their 45 overs. Rob Williams bowled well for the visitors with figures of 2-46, but Lawrenny had the tough task of scoring 266 to win the match. Nic Cope (3-20) and Phasant Gautam (3-31) were there to ensure that that didn’t happen, as despite 28 from Alfie Buckle and 22 from Harry Thomas, Lawrenny were bowled out for 140. Maximum points for the hosts, who jump back above Neyland into third place.
Neyland hosted Carew, with the visitors looking to bounce back from their first loss of season last time out against Cresselly. Neyland chose to bat first and had a strong start to the innings, with Paul Murray (48) and Greg Miller (34) combining for a opening partnership of 65 before Joel Read (3-21) took Greg’s wicket. Shaun Whitfield (3-24), Sam Harts (2-25) and Barry Evans (2-30) took the remaining wickets as Neyland were bowled out for 155. Shaun Whitfield top scored for the visitors with 47, this combined with his 3 wickets showing his value as an all rounder for the league leaders. Captain Brian Hall remained at the crease with 37 not out to see Carew pass the target in the 39th over for the loss of four wickets. Maximum points for Carew, as they move back into pole position in the table.
Whitland extended their gap over relegation rivals Haverfordwest with their 20 point victory over strugglers Llangwm. Llangwm chose to bat first, with Dom Asson top scoring with 14 before they were bowled out for 76, Scott Newton (3-12) and Geraint Jones (3-19) the pick of the bowlers for the hosts. Whitland had no trouble in passing the target, With Gethin Scourfield (38no) and Scott Newton (21no) remaining at the crease to see their side over the line. This victory sees Whitland go 16 points clear of the drop zone.
