Saturday (Mar 29) saw the launch of the ‘Haverfordwest 5k Your Way’ where anyone who has been affected by cancer can join together and walk, jog, run, cheer, volunteer or join for a coffee at the emphasis to connect with other people impacted by cancer.
Coinciding with the regular Haverfordwest parkrun on the picturesque Haverfordwest Racecourse, 130 participants set off at 9am, supported by friends and family alongside 16 volunteers.
The 5k course on Haverfordwest Racecourse allows all involved with parkrun to work alongside regular use of the Public Park, which is a registered charity, maintained by a dedicated number of volunteers, some who have been on the Trust committee since its ‘birth’ in 1974 and now, 50 years later ensures the people of the Town continue to enjoy recreational activities, which include football and cricket, the home ground of the oldest Cricket Club in Wales, Haverfordwest Town CC.
The group to ‘Move against Cancer’ was developed by Barbara Brown, well recognised as a regular ‘tail walker’ at the weekly, parkrun event, although for the launch day she was a timekeeper to greet the runners and walkers over the finish line before enjoying cake, with donations of £140 received, to celebrate the day. The motto of the 5k Your Way is ‘No project is greater than You’ and anyone who has been touched in anyway by cancer can register to take part, the last Saturday of every month the designated day for the event.
The first ambassador for the Haverfordwest 5k Your Way was Barbara and she was joined at the launch event by other ambassadors, all of who are regulars at the local parkrun, Laurence Worth, Helen Jenkins, Jonathan Twigg, Charlotte Shepherd and Caroline McCoy, whilst Kathryn Shepherd and Kelly Moodie were unable to attend.
The next 5K your Way takes place on Saturday (Apr 26) at 9am, meeting in the car park of Haverfordwest Cricket Club.
