Carew, Saundersfoot and Cresselly sit top of the Pembrokeshire Division 1 after two weeks, being the only unbeaten teams in the league, the Rooks holding a 1 point lead over the Seasiders who themselves are a point clear of the Doves, with all the fixtures being fulfilled on the second week of the season. There were 6832 runs were scorched and 286 wickets taken, Hundleton 2nds in division 5 the only side not to lose a wicket and Herbrandston 2nds lost by a single run as they failed to overhaul Pembroke Dock 2nds 154-8 at Little Castle Grove in the same division, the highest score of the season posted by Cresselly in division 1, with 299 at home to Burton.
Having lost the toss witnessed by umpires Tony Pasternak and Huw Simpkins, skipper Rhys Davies (42; 5x4) opened the innings for Carew (184-6) and was joined by Timmy Hicks (67; 9x4) to add 104 for the second wicket which was the corner stone for a 28 run victory at Springfield as hosts Whitland were dismissed for 156 in their pursuit. Spinner Scott Newton (2-37) and Gopal Ramasamy (2-28) were the most successful bowlers for the Borders, veteran Wayne Howells conceding just 18 runs from his nine overs. Johnny Thomas top scored with 46 (3x6; 4x4) for the home side, who were in the mix at 98-4 before he was trapped LBW by Iori Hicks (2-42) and opening bowler James Hinchcliffe had an impressive return of 2-26. Ramasamy struck a maximum and five boundaries in a rapid 31 but was one of the wickets for Shaun Whitfields (3-42), the seamer had also removed opening batsman Kevin Pearce, the skipper having scored 21 (4x4). Davies laid his claim for the man of the match award as he policed the final overs and took 3-14, to secure a second consecutive victory for his side.
Saundersfoot (258-1) followed up their opening day success at Herbrandston by pummelling Haverfordwest (257-5) by nine wickets at the King George V field, with over ten overs of the innings remaining. Nigel Richards was the lone umpire for the game and he witnessed Simon Stanford set the main sails for the hosts as he was unbeaten on 142, with seven maximums and twelve boundaries from 104 balls after he opened his seasons account a week ago with 47. He shared an opening partnership of 169 with Tom Mansbridge, who stroked a run a ball half century, which included a six and six boundaries. Older brother Jon then joined the fray to see his side over the line with man of the match Stanford, the partnership of 88 saw the Mansbridge unbeaten on 43 (2x6; 5x4) to go alongside his 77 from last weekend, to set the scene for a top of the table encounter next weekend as they travel to the Gerlad Hicks Memorial ground to take on Carew.
The visitors themselves also had a field day as Ben Field stroked an unbeaten 119 (5x6; 19x4) adding 74 for the third wicket with elder brother Daniel (37; 1x6; 6x4) before former Wales opening bowler Jonny White (17no; 1x4) helped the younger field add 72 for the sixth wicket. Saundersfoot's Usman Ali was the main wicket taker with 3-48.
Cresselly amassed 299-7 on another belter of a runway prepared by Richard Arthur at home to Burton whose response fell short at 231-5, the run fest witnessed by umpires Neill Crawshaw and Rob Bellerby. The home side batted as a team, Morgan Lewis top scoring with 69 as new recruit Kyle Quartermaine scored 43, alongside former Glamorgan 2nds all rounder Tom Murphy (31), vice captain Dan James (26no) and Alyx Bailey (26) to leave an imposing run chase for last season's division 2 champions. Gavin Campbell, spinner Morgan Scale and Daniel Ridge all snaffled a brace of wickets before visiting captain Toby Hayman top scored with 63 in the run chase, alongside Joe Kiff (55) and Jon Venables (44), the game eventually lost by 68 runs.
James Morris Memorial Cup holders Neyland (275-5) secured their first victory of the season with a fifty run success at the Athletic Ground over Herbrandston (225-9) in front of umpires Jon Willington and Chris Stapleton. Paul Murray (62; 1x6; 7x4) and veteran Greg Miller (24; 4x4) added 70 for the opening partnership before visiting captain Robbie Hood removed Miller and Dai Davies in consecutive balls in his 3-45, as he tried eight different bowlers to stem the all whites flow of runs. Ross Hardy top scored with 67 (2x6; 10x4) and added 94 for the third wicket with Murray before Andrew Miller belied his advancing years to steer his side to a formidable target. The all rounder was unbeaten on 44 (4x4) and added 36 for the fifth wicket with Overs 50s international Alan Webster who had a run a ball 20 (1x6; 2x4) and an unbeaten sixth wicket partnership with teenager Ashley Watkins (26no; 3x4).
The visitors, who are now second to bottom of the league took some solace from the defeat as they had an opening partnership of 115 between Harry Nicholas (64; 5x4) and teenager Charlie Malloy (44; 6x4) before Malloy was run out by Greg Miller. A run later the wind was taken out of Nicholas innings as the spinning Miller had him caught by Jack John, the opening bowler then returning to the stage himself to ensure his side secured victory with 3-55, after Webster had removed a potentially dangerous pairing of former Neyland star Nathan Banner (10) and Kristain Bennett (15) in the middle order. Teenager Morgan Britton was unbeaten on 11 to support his 1-32 as the new ball bowler earlier in the day.
Llangwm skipper Steve Mills won the toss at Pills Park overseen by umpires Michael Borland and Trevor Evans, and elected to make first use of the wicket, but his side were dismissed for 141, Chris Inward marking his first appearance of the season with 50 and Ollie Davies adding 20. Rob Willimas continues to discount his advancing years as he took 3-42 for the Gavanyards alongside his captain Ryan Morton (3-22), Harry Thomas then contributed an unbeaten 53 in partnership with teenager Finly Lewis (43) to secure a seven wicket success, Mills leading from the front for his bottom of the table side by taking all three wickets for 22. Next week the three salmons make the short journey up the hill to Oatfield Park to take on Burton which can be deemed a season defining fixture as two points separate them at the foot of the table.
