Goodwick United are the 2026 Pembrokeshire Senior Cup winners, claiming the county's premier cup prize with a 3-1 victory over Monkton Swifts in front of a passionate crowd of 1,280 at a sun-soaked final.

It was an occasion that crackled with atmosphere from the off, the lineups greeted with a wall of noise from the supporters, and the match itself delivered plenty to shout about - though it was the red and black of Goodwick who ultimately had the final say.

A measured start gives way to drama

Goodwick started the brighter of the two sides, showing good composure in possession and testing Monkton early through corners and set-pieces. The Swifts, however, grew into the game and soon started to show what they are about. A sharp counter-attack down the right on seven minutes saw Nick Jones required to come and sweep the danger away with authority, the first of many commanding interventions from the Goodwick goalkeeper on the afternoon.

Rhys Jones tried his luck with a free-kick from distance on ten minutes, comfortably gathered by Taylor Gullam, before Jimmy Wilkes found himself with a chance in the box on eleven minutes - but he couldn't get a proper connection and the effort went straight at Jones.

Adams breaks the deadlock

The opening goal arrived on 20 minutes and it was a set piece that produced it. A Goodwick corner was met with a good header, and though Gullam got something on it and the ball struck the crossbar, Ben Adams was quickest to react, heading the rebound back into the net to give Goodwick the lead.

Monkton looked to respond. Paul Miller dragged a shot wide on 27 minutes, and Rhys Dalling - so often the man for the big occasion - was unlucky on 29 minutes, driving down the left and attempting to pick out Adams in the box, only for a Monkton defender to make a timely interception.

The half-hour mark produced one of the moments of the match. Ben Steele, in commanding form all afternoon, carried the ball out of defence and into the final third, before releasing a forward down the right. The Monkton shot was saved by Jones, before a well struck rebound had him beat - only for Kyle O'Sullivan - right back on the afternoon - to produce an extraordinary goal-line clearance to keep Goodwick ahead.

Rhys Dalling then found himself through on goal on 36 minutes after knocking the ball past a defender, before a challenge from behind sent him flying. What looked a penalty from our vantage point was waved away despite Dalling's pleas for a spot-kick.

Up the other end, Dylan Davies showed his credentials as one of the county's most dangerous forwards, racing to a ball on the right, only for Nick Jones to come off his line sharply and save well.

Wilkes levels

The equaliser came on 42 minutes and it was a goal of real quality. Ben Steele once again proved the catalyst, splitting the Goodwick defence with a perfectly weighted ball through the lines. Jimmy Wilkes ran onto it and finished calmly past Jones with his left foot - a composed, assured finish on the biggest stage.

Monkton almost doubled their lead immediately, with Gareth Finnegan slipping in and firing wide on his left foot, before another Monkton attack saw Wilkes played in down the right again - Jones this time producing another fine save to keep the scores level at the interval.

It had been a good half of football - Goodwick the more threatening in the opening exchanges, but Monkton growing into the game, finishing the half the stronger of the two sides.

A half-time change

Goodwick made a tactical switch at half-time, introducing Tom Jago for Sion O'Sullivan, with Ben Adams dropping into the base of midfield where he has more often played this season.

Jago tested Gullam early in the second half, rounding the goalkeeper but seeing his effort cleared off the line. A corner on 53 minutes produced a Rhys Jones header that sailed over, before the moment that swung the final decisively.

On 55 minutes, Rhys Dalling - stepping up, as he so often does on the big occasion - produced a moment of individual brilliance. Dancing past one challenge, then another, he cut inside onto his right foot and beat Gullam with a good finish.

A fiery finale

The second half grew increasingly heated as Monkton pressed for an equaliser they never quite found. The referee faced a series of difficult decisions that drew mounting frustration from the Monkton faithful, with skipper Ben Steele a constant presence at the fourth official's side, barely disguising his displeasure.

Jago went close with an acrobatic overhead kick on 76 minutes that was deflected wide for a corner. Nick Jones continued to be outstanding, producing a superb low save to his bottom right on 78 minutes after Monkton substitute Connor Davies showed real tenacity to win the ball back and fire across goal.

Jack Clarke burst into the box on 84 minutes and went to ground, with the stadium once again waiting in anticipation for the referee's call. The loud Monkton appeals were waved away - yet another contentious moment in a second half that had plenty of them. Jones was equally commanding from set-pieces, claiming an excellent punch from a corner on 88 minutes to snuff out the danger.

The temperature boiled over on 90 minutes when substitute James Russell, freshly introduced from the bench, was sin-binned for dissent - the culmination of a growing tension that had simmered throughout the half.

Horgan seals it in stunning fashion

With Monkton throwing everyone forward in the 94th minute, Monkton's goalkeeper played a free-kick into a box packed with 21 players. The ball was headed clear, dropping to Jonny Horgan who showed great pace to knock it past Gullam before showing his composure to fire into the empty net for a goal that sent the Goodwick fans wild.

Man of the Match: Nick Jones

In a game of no shortage of quality, Nick Jones stood above all others. The Goodwick goalkeeper made a string of outstanding one-on-one saves throughout the afternoon, was commanding in claiming crosses and corners, and brought a calm authority to everything he did. On a day when Monkton created genuine chances, Jones ensured each one came to nothing. A brilliant individual display.
