We are delighted to share another Pembrokeshire junior chess update from Martin Jones.

Pembrokeshire Junior Chess Club had another fantastic evening on Tuesday 18th February when they travelled to face Llanelli White Knights – returning the visit from before Christmas. Thanks go to Jason Garcia for organising the fixture and for the warm welcome on the night.

The club took nine players to Llanelli, with White Knights rotating some of their 13 players throughout the evening. Special thanks to all the parents who drove and took passengers, especially Fiona who arrived a little late after getting a flat tyre – dedication indeed. Da iawn!

Whilst winning isn't everything at this age, with learning and enjoying the game being paramount, there was some amazing play from both sides showing great technique and understanding for their years.

Special mention goes to Sebastian, who finished the night with a 100% record, and Ethan, who also went unbeaten. A notable mention too for Steff, making his debut for the club – the grandson of the late Bev Palmer, who ran the original Haverfordwest Chess Club for many years. Pembrokeshire Chess Club, formerly Haverfordwest Chess Club before relocating to Steynton, can trace its roots back to May 1966. Good wins on the night for Steff and Henry, with notable victories for most of the players.

It was also pleasing to see Ian Eustis, Director of Junior Chess in Wales, come along to watch the games. He was impressed by the standard of play from both teams.

Well done to all – keep up the great work!
