It was billed as a night not to be missed, and Mark Boyle – also known as "Mr Magic" – certainly delivered the goods at Hook Sports and Social Club on Saturday night.
The event, organised by local pool stalwart Carl Sheehan, saw the world number two take on over 40 players from across Pembrokeshire in what turned out to be a brilliant showcase of elite-level pool.
Boyle started in lightning fashion, breaking and dishing in his opening three frames – clearing up on his very first visit to the table each time. By the end of the evening, he'd racked up double figures for dishes, with his cue ball on an absolute string. Watching him float and zip the white along the cloth with such precision was an absolute joy.
Each time Boyle managed a dish against an opponent, they were given the "right to reply" – a chance to break and clear themselves, though unsurprisingly, most challengers found the task rather tricky against such quality.
The first to get the better of Mr Magic was Scott McQuarrie, a Pembrokeshire stalwart who has represented Wales at international level – deservedly receiving a loud roar from the crowd as the confetti exploded in celebration. A handful of players would get the "bragging rights" of a victory over Boyle as the night went on, including Carl's son, Kai, in an entertaining contest.
As the night wore on, Boyle's competitive edge became more relaxed as he treated the audience to some trick shots, showing off the skills that have earned him over 50 major titles. There was also a break for food – all included in the ticket price – along with raffles and auctions for signed merchandise.
The atmosphere throughout was fantastic. A proper community night out, top-class entertainment, and memories to last. Hats off to Carl Sheehan for pulling it together and to Hook Sports and Social Club for hosting. Another event which shows why Pembrokeshire is such a thriving hot bed for pool in the country.
